I can't even check files because the download screen says the download has failed then just shuts down.

Another client? You mean delete all the files, re-download the software client (410) from a different site than this than redownload that and see how it goes?

try to re-download it from this site.. just saw there are no mirrors listed on the est site. and yes. delete them all and try again, you'd be surprised how well that can work, might not though but should

One more solution for people with older computers or laptops; install directX 9.0. I installed it because I wanted to play sims while waiting for my ticket to yield an answer, cabal works like magic.

okay i had this problem. i turned off my firewall. uninstalled microsoft security essensials. so i have literally Nothing.. And i still get this issue?

i run the game. and the nprotect loads up, and then i see a box. like a program window almost. but its so fast to open and close that i cant tell what it is.
