It has been a long time...

Looking for some commentary and/or ratings on this one. Not sure if I'll make it a sig yet. I'm especially wondering about lighting, and ways I might improve the ice. For the ice I made a rough sketch of it and did an inner bevel, some glow effects and a satin texture, then layered the result onto itself a few times, masking different portions on each layer. One thing I would like tips on if possible is ways to make smooth portions of ice look more like ice and not as much like the background. I'm not exactly sure but you can try to do some hue/saturation and levels layers to change the color. Or you can simply do a white brush over the areas you want and change the opacity settings or layer settings. Then erase parts you don't want changed. I appreciate the comments. I think I'm learning more effective use of GIMP, but I can always improve further. Perhaps something more like this would work. Please rate and/or comment; critiques and advice are welcome.

It needs to be blended in a lot more, because as of right now it just looks like an ice picture with a picture pasted on top of it :( You have to make the character match the scenery!

you should try looking at a real piece of ice, or another anime version, and see if you can't check the similarities or differences, and work on it, with that on the side.

a light opacity of a flame fractal would look nice. :)

That actually took me a bit to figure it out. But I still love it.
And about the picture, I actually found it out of a stock a while ago it originally has 3 people in the picture.
It was a lot of smudging, and blending, and gradiant maps.
Ugh.

6/10 Tysukiomi. It looks ok in general, but it does have room for improvement. Right now it seems a bit chaotic to me, could probably use a bit of editing in its color/blending and theme. I think I'm a little bit nice with criticism though, but I almost never give anything 10/10 lol. Take my advice with a grain of salt, I'm still learning.

I came up with a revision of my previous offering (started with a 1600 by 900 and scaled it down to 711 by 400). Used a different approach to create the ice formation. I like it better in some ways, but I like the shininess of the previous work also. This one I think looks a bit more defined at least, but I'll probably work on it further at some point, as it's not quite where I want it. However, I wanted to get some feedback on my revisions so far to see if I'm headed in the right direction.
Tried to re-utilize some techniques I used on my current sig to get a better lighting and blending of the character with the scene, hopefully I've made some progress with that aspect. Please rate and comment. As always, I welcome suggestions and criticism.

I wanted an icy scene since the character is associated with using ice in the game he comes from. And it was winter when I started working on this, lol. On a side note, I was originally making this as a wallpaper, but I thought this would be a good subject to try and help me develop new techniques and better lighting and blending skills.

What I mean by blending is that the picture/ render has to go with the background. In your latest sig, It looks so randomly placed. Blending can be many things, as long as the picture goes with the background. This can be achieved by adjusting the lighting, making the colors match, etc. Just keep practicing :)

Its hard to have an eye for these kind of stuff. Trying going to deviantart.com and look at some of the gfx examples to get an idea of what flows.

Your red sig would have look a lot better if the flames were centered right behind the character and spreading outwards... not placed randomly. But people have their own style and ways of looking at things. If you send me those stock pics I can help make you a better example.

Hmm well I like the background ok but the character looks like it was put on to the background with minimal blending. I think one of my biggest issues with it is color and light matching. With my work I've been trying to improve my ability to make the lighting and color of the character somewhat match the background of my sig but not lose the character's actual color scheme, if that makes any sense. I'll try to give you advice based on my attempts and some tutorials I've read. Hopefully I'm not giving bad advice.

Try messing with some light opacity gradients or brushes to blend the lighting and color of the character with the background a little better, perhaps a bit of light opacity yellows, oranges and reds (whatever colors are in your background) for shading (but don't drown out your character's original color too much) and some light opacity pale yellow (or some very pale color may not need to be yellow) for some extra lighting effects. Also, sometimes you may want to blend, smudge, etc. parts of your character a bit to cut down on 'shadows' drawn on the character if you feel they conflict too much with your lighting (I don't think you'll need to do this much on your character). You might also try to eliminate the light "glowing outline" around the edge of the character as much as you can, so that the character looks sharper and more defined.

Also you might look for YumCookies sig tutorials for some tips (I think they are on some thread in the sig gallery they really helped me). Best thing you can do is keep playing with it and after you feel like you've made some progress try putting it up for review. As you practice, try to get a feel for the effects of lighting and how they play in to how the character should be shaded, lightened, colored, etc. Well that's my 2 cents (hope my advice is ok). Also it might help if you mention what image editing software you use (I'm assuming some version of photoshop).

I'd rate it 6.5/10 at this point.
Well that is one way to handle color blending. The ripples are kinda lost in the white area though. If you are going to go for more of a black and white style you might try coloring some of the ripples with something (perhaps red, experiment to see what looks good for what you want) like the white ripples/areas in your original version for instance. I still recommend you try to eliminate the pale, semi-transparent white border around your character as much as you can. Sometimes the only way to do that effectively is to zoom in to 200 or 400% and carefully erase the outline around the edge of the character.

EDIT: I'm suggesting some color to help make the sig more lively, right now it looks a little bit too black and white to me, and in some areas this causes you to lose details in your background in ways that don't flow as well as they could. That's the way I'm seeing it. But it's your sig, don't let people's opinions change your style. Keep practicing!

:E Huhm. There's something about it that's throwing me off. You could probably mess with the glow around him more to match the background, I recommend a white since the sig itself has a white glow, so it blends in more, though I do like the yellow glow itself, emitting from him.

^^^^ though the bottom where it cuts off is something that baffles me.

FS sig: 8/10. Idk, maybe too many colors?
Current sig: 9/10. I like it.

640x360. Slightly different than previous submission, different shading on the snow, after this I won't be submitting any more of this one unless I have a major improvement or hint on things to do different. I'm considering using a completely different render and style for a new sig in the future, since this one is meant to be big.

lol tbh, the only reason why there's that many colors is 'cause of Captain America. Not used to that.


I love the ice, though it looks like a sketch. The character itself is more simple, straight colors and shading; make the ice seem like that. Blur > Setting would be lighten. Maybe others, blur itself. Mess with the filters, make it seem icey... :o you know. Like dry ice or the breath you see when you blow out, on a nice, cold day.


well in photoshop, if you don't find a good color, I recommend pressing CTRL-U. it helps, you can move the option around, otherwise you can do colorize and change all of it at once. :) to make it one shade.

I like the first one best, the text is easier to read under the black line.
I agree with you that cutting (or rendering) is easily the hardest part of the process. After that is lighting and color. (those two kill my results more than anything else after rendering X_X)

For those who were curious on how I cut the character...

After trying a few different rendering methods, from color selection to layer masks, I've settled on using the pen tool (paths) to make my edges as neat as possible and an occasional use of the eraser and clone tool to do small touch-up work. I think these techniques work the same way in Photoshop, but in GIMP I make the entire path for the cut I want to make, then I curve specific segments of the path where needed to make it cleaner. Zooming in to as much as 400-800% helps with this, but sometimes you'll want to refer to your original stock at 100% zoom to help make sure you cut it right and that you aren't confusing background elements with elements of the render.

After you make your cut, look for areas you might have messed up and either patch them with the clone tool, looking to make sure the pixels you paste match with the area you are patching, or trim them with the eraser (or another path if you need to). Rendering takes time, practice, and patience (I still have room for improvement). It helps if you have pictures of your subject from multiple angles to reference. Of course, you should try to check your render against a few different solid color backgrounds, (usually a black one and a white one; I also use a green one sometimes) to make sure your edges look good.

wall 'o text on rendering

My method is taking a brush, with about ~85% hardness and just following the edges. Adjusting brush size when need be. The 15% feather makes it so some of the 'little mistakes' go unnoticed since it sorta just blends in with a slight opaqueness to it. Its my "50% effort for 90% quality" method. I use yours (paths) when i really want to make it look sharp.

yea but the sig is pretty old now the thing is from some game i used to play. i want a cool sig like u did my friend syllus^^ he recommend me to u ^^inficathi
