New sig I made for distro o.O I guess I'm on this light blue/purple craze tonight, lols. Oh well.

As for my other sig Cathi, nah no gradients were used. Just lots of blending/transforming/and layer work.
I like your sigs abstract designs, however I tend to sway for more of the abstract whole design. The box thing most people like in their sigs, I tend to stray away from since I'm uber picky. :)

and the only reason the colors are brighter is due to the proc costume's dark nature. :P Too much dark = boring and too heavy. The bright colors I tend to be using brings more of a feeling/livelyhood to the sigs versus strictly dark oriented color schemes.

I dont do animations anymore. I dont have my animationshop cracked. I'd have to retorrent it, and that my friend, takes time. I'm sure Cathi would be happy to help you, if she declines, then I guess you're outta luck my freind.

DK's sig (in my opinion) has too much going on. The name and guild should stand out so people who WHO that bad ass looking person is. And where they're from. Too many screenshots in too small of a space. Blending multiple images into one is great, but I think they're confusing if you have too many people doing too many different things. I'd keep the Romp/DK as the primary focus, kinda like you have, but add a bit of an overlay of some sort of a texture or something to draw the focus away from the other people in the signature. Hmm. I'll see if I can play with what you've got to show you what I mean. Idk how far I can get with just a PNG file, but we'll see. :)

Your sigs always have the flared 'smoke' style. It's awesome! :) But I do suggest trying different sorts of 'outter bounds' sort of PNG types. Like.. Hmmm. Use sparkles or specks of color outside the box with or without the smoke.

lol I don't mean sigs-- it's not that I don't do it that way, it's simply that it's not in my mood atm.

Plus boyfriend loves the shiny stuff, so I just do it the way I get requests. if they want something else, then I'd do that.

I was actually asking about learning Adobe After Effects, or Mocha. :o You do know about them, don't you?

My brand new desktop I built has issues running the ramrender. It's super slow. Makes me QQ. THe program is just a HUGE program to run. So when it's rendering the files, especially if it's a long one, expect to have abook or something to do while you wait xD

I use CS4. CS5 is just stuff moved around. Not much difference, if any. :) Still working on getting my plug-ins going. Lord knows I dont pay for 3/4 of them xD

Umm. It's a LOT like Photoshop, Cathi. Seriously. It has a lot of layers and effects you can play with that are re-installed. Blending layers. The most important thing you have to learn about is keymapping which is terribly easy. Keymapping and pathwork.

and yeah it's an overlay to help it blend better with the black/darker backgrounds like on Sei's forum. The cut off image thing drives me nuts. I like it to be more of a 'fade' or cleaner transition. Idk.

CS5 is native 64 bit, not even working on 32 bit systems. This has a HUGE performance increase overall, aka faster renders, both in preview and for final. In the design part, there is not much difference, maybe a few new things idk, but on performance / technical side, there is a huge difference. =D

MAYBE IF SOMEONE GOT ME A NEW COMPUTER I'd be able to run CS5 on my computer.

=__= and no, I don't want to get a 64 bit thingy.

o.O the box seems a little overwhelming, but otherwise the balance between the colors in it is good. I love the fade out of the character's feet around the name, but it could be a little bright, when viewed on a white forum.

More blending :) the text up top is semi hard to read, you cant really tell what the character is or is doing in the image. Make more of him visible and add more color contrast. It'll brighten up the dull blurred look the fire has. :)

Quickie signature I made for Ticky lastnight. Made an animated one last night but I cant get fkn photoshop to render it properly. *kicks* STupid low quality shet.

I was trying some new things, the render was from a screen shot of force kick and there was a lot of unnatural coloration and distortion so I tried to smudge some of it and cover the rest with effects (in this case, fire), but I went overboard.

The fire was a few layers of a couple different fractals I made in Apophysis, set on screen for the most part. It looked a little better when I was working on it, when i tried to flatten the image it didn't come out right.... I might try tinkering with Curves to try and help with contrast here and there, but the entire sig needs reworking. Hopefully I'll figure out where I messed up and improve it without too much trouble.

Ahh cool, which one? I'm planning on getting a tablet but I don't know what to aim for, for sure I won't be getting an Intuos or anything. Any recommendations? (Question open to anyone :P)
It takes me about an hour+ to sort of finish my pencil drawings. I'm not that good though, still practicing/learning. xD I'm completely jealous of your shading/anatomy/style/everything else. Especially getting perspective in, I don't have any clue on how to work it.

I see where you're coming from with the Naruto thing. No, funny enough that's his gun. I kinda cut him out myself and decided that was his end.
And also, it's not Filter>Distort>water-y stuff, funny enough. I spent quite some time messing around with multiple elements to get that look. But if that's
simpler, and I knew it was there, I wold have used that instead. :P

Now for the story: today at school, the army visited. They had a deck of playing cards, and I wanted it.
The price was 75 pushups. To make a long story short, I missed it by 7, but got the cards.
These guys inspired me. They told me their story(ies), and I felt compelled to make a tribute to them. Even if it is only in this way. Help me improve!!!Por favor, please, s'il vous plait, etc...

=] I remember when the army/navy/air force came to our school this year. I got key chains galore, got to keep in contact with a few of them, and did 7 pull ups for a bouncy ball. :D it was amazing.

But as a male, or I assume you are one, you might be closer inclined to have a more inspirational experience, though I do get emotional.

I like it, just need a little "oomf" :)

What can I say? I love the pose of a head-on force kick. Especially in martial gear :cool:
EDIT: Acually, the sharpening does look ok. Idk what was wrong with me...I'm probably just too concious of my non-standard touch-up methods. When I break form I get nervous if I over or under-do stuff, lol.

Oh snap, cuteness factor strikes again! And I see some rather nice pet renders....
My only gripe with it is I don't like the transition from the dark region at the left to the lighter region in the middle, but that's more of a personal style peeve.
9.3/10

P.S. I reserve 10's for those once in a lifetime, epic sigs that are above and beyond what I consider good or nearly perfect.

No stat banner version, with a little more cleanup and some additional spikey-ness on the edges of the flames.
(I love fur brushes, they are so useful in smudging and...well...everything :))

you see how it's a shape?

make some of the fire and heat come off.
either that or erase some of the inside. if you see a spot where the pattern isn't there, like to the left and the right, erase a little bit. make it look like the fire is curling more arround him.

@infiCathi: It might not be your best outcome, but for some reason I like the excess white, lol. But it does seem overpowering still. Usually I trash the in-game effects and remake or redo them myself when I render, but that's me - 8/10

The hardest critique is the best critique only if you state all the reasons why you like or dislike the piece (mostly dislike) and then to suggest ways to improve it, imo. To really give a good critique you should say a lot more than just one line in general. I find your reason as stated disproportionate to the ranking you gave, but that's my opinion. As for your sig, I like it quite a bit, but the render looks pixely in some areas, particularly around the character's left arm and some of his hair on the right side - 8/10

EDIT: I don't think I'm at the point where I can give a REALLY good critique yet, I'm still learning what looks good in a sig.

mm. Actually looking at the character, the position for what you did the fire wasn't ideal, since it should have been based directly off his knee, since that's where the impact is at. Though you did do with the fire what I said, and I love it. :)

So do you mean like I needed to kill some of the fire inside the radius of impact or completely redo the flow of the fire to expand out from the knee? (I'm trying to learn how to interpret criticism correctly xD)

I was originally trying to use the fire to cover badly distorted/discolored areas and tried to make it look like the character was escaping the fire out of the plane of the screen....

lol if you want to do a good job, do the good job. I like how it sort of swirly around him, if you did that on purpose, I mean.
The impact point should be at the knee, but with how the angle of your character is, it would cover the face, so you can probably follow it along the shin, having the fire come outwards in that way, and have that swirl around him. Downwards motion would be more key, since that's the way the fire would be, but you'd have to make the effect seem as if it was curling in a circle around him, with little heats of flame sliding off.

=] but otherwise, your sig is good.

god a little lazy on the bottom with the flame shapes and details, I see.

I did save it as png, but I intended the background to always be the color of dark forums, mostly cause I wanted the flames to have that background to play off of regardless of the forum mode. The way I made the sig, the flames wouldn't show in GIMP unless I put something behind them (screen layer modes don't like having nothing behind them) and I didn't feel like bothering to cut a background that had a good shape for the sig in normal view mode (lazyness strikes again). I'll remove the rectangular backdrop and see what I get when I have time, and desire, to do so.

NOTE: Looking at it w/o the rectangle in GIMP, my shaped background for the flames is ok...but there would be some gray around the edges if I posted on white background as is.

Mmm. I see what you mean, but at the same time you could probably just do a quick selection of the flame layers, and do a light overlay or 20-40% opacity layer around it.

:T do whatever looks gewd, I try to transfer mine back and forth, if I do an off-the box sig.

I don't think you'd like it if i went into full detail, id tell you about
composition, focal, lighting, flow etc. Imo what i said was hard critique based on my ranking for it, if i went deeper it would be
straight out mean.

Yes I'm aware I'm still an amateur. I appreciate a little detailed criticism though, since I'm pursuing this as a hobby, but I really want to improve. Don't feel the need to hold back (I appreciate it when criticism is done objectively and/or constructively, though I'm not a stranger to brutal criticism), but you don't need to get so detailed that you write an essay, if you get what I mean.

I read tutorials when I can to help me, but every piece has it's own quirks, and I don't always know when some principles and techniques should be followed or ignored.

I know practice helps with this, but if you always practice a bad set of skills or principles, you may struggle much longer to come to a higher level. That's why I appreciate more detail in critique (also when I don't have time to work on stuff, I can come back to the criticism and mull it over in my head).

EDIT: It's funny, but your sig seems familiar to me, can't remember where I saw it though. It is really cool :)

I used to design as a hobby as well, it's fun and you can actually get somewhere if your really good. I dont have photoshop anymore so i cant design. lol thanks, im actually debating if i even wanna put my sigs on display anymore some ripped one of my peices, i was gone for a year i come back and he says he made it lol. Pissed me off =/

In addition to trying to get a grasp of the focal in each piece, I'm also working on flow and color and composition...and blending...and depth...and lighting on the side (that's nearly everything isn't it :()

To celebrate full osm martial, possibly my favorite set, I tried using a render from the image in the link below to make the sig shown. I appreciate criticism as well as ideas to take the sig farther. I kinda got stuck and don't know where else I could go with this.

Try to make the sig either do a fade into the background, or actually do it more rectangular, with a wider width.

Some sigs just need the time to develop, and with time you get more ideas, and things you want to do with it. He's revising it, slowly.

Ok, I made time...didn't feel like studying with a crazy headache.

The way I usually work is, I start with an idea and work on it for a while, posting it for critique on occasion even though I know there are things I could improve already, such as contrast, effects, etc. This is partly to help keep me from going in a bad direction when I'm making it (I still consider myself a novice ya know). Eventually I get to a point where I can't think of anything else I can improve for a while, then I post it for review and enjoyment, as is the case now.

First one: Very cool. Only real question about it that I have is why the flame on the right shoulder (viewer's right) is dark toward the center...
That doesn't sit right with me - 9.4/10
Second one: Nice pose for the render and a good use of effects with it, but I'm not liking the cape around the chest of the character being a very bright white - 9/10

I'd like to see more stuff like the first two 0.0

Third one: Good overall, render could stand a little smoothing around some areas of the legs and the hanging coat-tails, but its alright - 9.2/10
Fourth one: Style isn't my favorite, but it works...with a little tweaking and removal of some thin edges on the render, it could almost look real - 9.5/10

Last one: Looks sweet overall, though the render has some edges and lines that look ever so slightly pixelated, but this is minor (especially the hair).
Also the word "TIME" in the background seems a little too hidden by effects/shapes in front of the " T I " if you wanted it read easily - 9.1/10

Don't mind the renders, most of them I just sorta half-ass with a eraser cuz im just that lazy. 10 min with eraser > 20 min with paths; 90% quality.. ill take it.
obtw, if u didnt know, she doesnt render herself... its best that way, trust me. ^^

EDIT: Added a text version (has slightly different lighting and a few other things done to it). Ok, no more edits on this post! I'll wait for a bit, see if anything glaring comes up, then I'll use whatever version I end up with. I just keep finding areas where I miss bad spots when I make my first version...hopefully that will be less frequent with practice, in due time. I'm going to try to make myself post stuff only once for review, then either use, or post what I come up with and leave it at that, with minimal post editing....

Decided I'd try my hand at using some c4ds and make a sig that was 500x150. I'm not sure about text (I never am lol) and lighting (especially on the render). I just make text so that it works with the color in the sig and place it so that it doesn't interfere with the focal...or that's what I try to do anyway. I also tried branching out from '2 color sigs' to use a bit of oranges and reds to show hot metal where it was 'cut' by the render and a little bit of heat radiating from these areas. Enjoy.

There are parts of the render that are a little confusing at first glance. The area around the thumb especially threw me off for a bit; I had to look at it a few times to figure out what position it was in. Also the point at which the unfurled binding fades out in the bottom edge is a little awkward to me; it almost looked like it didn't belong with the render for a few glances. Then again, maybe I was too stressed over finals to see it right the first time (at least they are done now). Great piece though! 9.6/10

I don't know what other people's reasons are for their ratings, but I will try to tell you a few of the things that are bothering me about it. The render, looking at the original, is not smoothly cut. Additionally the lightning in some areas looks very unnatural; toward the point where it passes behind the cape it is very jagged, even boxxy.

I'm not a fan of the + signs in the top portion, I would cut back on them a lot, or even better get rid of them. Blending could also use some work; the cape especially demonstrates this where it should be fading into the background at the right, but instead of fading it looks almost cut off at that transition.

Also, the depth of the sig could stand some improving (I know depth is sometimes the hardest thing to achieve in sigs but it's worth the effort). The biggest problem I see is the left side, especially the big lighting bolt that should be 'behind' him; that general area needs work on blending, burning/dodging, sharpening/bluring, etc.

Last thing is the background you chose looks a bit out of place to me; it could just be the lack of depth, but I'm not liking the (trees?) in the background. Might try making that region a simple color gradient or something along those lines.

Also a side note: don't be afraid to get rid of a render's original effects that can be easily removed without ruining the render and substitute higher quality effects (in example, more natural lightning) that fit with the piece. Be careful if and when you do this though; you must replace every area where you removed effects with other, fitting effects or you run the risk of ruining lighting, etc.

I understand if this may be a lot to take in, but if you want to improve you need to look at criticism patiently and objectively and try to work on each area that can stand improving, this not only improves your piece but helps you learn techniques that will benefit your graphic art skills and teach you what works and what doesn't. Also, look at LOTS of tutorials, especially those that are related to issues you are having.

They are pretty nice, though I would shrink or eliminate the font for "Lightning" personally. It looks too big for the sigs as it is imo. I don't really like the script font for 'L' either, make it all one font, preferably one that is more techish (similar to the in-game text would be good). As far as text placement, I'm not sure where you should put it, but where it is is ok. Top one looks better in general, animation is more fun to look at. 8/10 for top, 7.5/10 for bottom.
