View Full Version : Installation Problem

I have had an issue before exactly like this one while trying to install CABAL on my new computer. I get everything installed and open the launcher, however I receive the following message:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\CABAL Online (NA-Global)\launcher\gateway\download.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."
So like a normal person should do, I came here for help. I saw a thread that tried explaining this, but when I tried fixing the problem using the methods stated by those within that thread, I received this message:
"Exception EAccessViolation in module cabal.exe at 00000000. Access violation at address 00000000. Read of address 00000000."
I use Trend Micro Titanium. Before asking and suggesting obvious things like "putting it on the exceptions list," I did that already. I have tried troubleshooting the problem like the sticky thread stated, but to no avail. I am quite frustrated at this problem seeing as I have yet to run into it until I got this new computer. Does anyone know what the issue here is and what to do about it?

Well, you could disable the trend micro service from starting at start up, that way it does not attach to windows kernel and cause problems, wut windows are you using? w7?

services can be accessed via task manager, and then navigating to service tab and then clicking the services button on the lower right hand of the task manager, this will open services.msc which is your control panel for services - and lists all the services currently available, running or not. Most like trend micro will be set to automatic or delayed start, which means even with exception added into the program, there could still be persisting problems. Ive seen a thread about this but you said you tried a few methods from that thread, this one i havnt actually had myself but ive heard of a few people experiencing, im not saying you didnt add the exceptions correctly btw; just saying it might still be the cause of the problems. Did you right click your update.exe in cabal folder, and under compatibility check run as admin in settings for all users? Just curious... i could think of alot of ways to attempt trouble shooting it but i guess if disabling the trend micro service itself doesnt help after reboot, then maybe submit help desk ticket as well as the thread on forums?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit). Upon going to task manager I fail to see any tabs. Trend Micro also has no visible way to turn it off without doing something complex I'm sure, so if you or anyone else uses Trend Micro knows how to shut it off so I can see if that's what the problem is, I'd be grateful for your help :)
BTW: When I run the update file as an administrator, nothing happens. I seriously have a lot of problems with this computer when it comes to CABAL.

hope that helps you navigate easier to the services, if you can disable the trend micro one and reboot, you should be able to determine pretty fast if trend micro is the cause or not :)

One more problem. I've opened up the services as you've told me to, and I found the Trend Micro. However, there is no option to stop it. Actually, there is, but it is unselectable. Solution?

Ah, a quick google search reveals why.

http://www.sbsfaq.com/wp-content/uploads/image_thumb75.png

Trend Micro WFBS has a feature to increase the security on it’s services so that not even an administrator can stop them. This feature is designed to help prevent malicious programs from terminating Trends ability to protect your system from infection.

In order to disable this feature temporarily, you need to login to the WFBS Security Server console, navigate to the Security Settings for that group – this is my server so it’s in the Servers (Default) group.

You will see in the screen shot below, the Client Security setting is set to High. Change this to Normal and select Save.

http://www.sbsfaq.com/wp-content/uploads/image88.png

Now – on the Server computer itself, right click on the Trend CSA icon in the taskbar and select Update Now. Give it a minute to grab the latest configuration from the Trend Security Server and then you will be able to right stop services again. See below.

sorry to drag that out so long but, i did not realize trend had that setting on its service. If you can properly follow that guide to disable the service, try starting the updater after that. Were not 100% sure a trend micro problem with cabal launching, but where you see greyed out options, you should select properties under that, and it will have a dialog box that looks like this:

note: you see windows update is the selected service i used in that one screenshot above, as i dont have trend micro service to select and view properties of.

Sigh... Apparently someone else installed this on my computer and never gave me the access password for this. At this point I don't even feel like trying to fix this. I don't find it worth the effort. Thank you for helping anyway.

hmm that seems odd, at any point, me and you never reached conclusion that trend micro was the cause of that, so you could always submit help desk ticket and just let it be for a bit, even if your not going to attempt to troubleshoot it wouldnt hurt to submit ticket to GM.

-_-, brother, some computer techs/builders/sellers really scwewed the pooch on that one didn't they? What if Trend has a major upgrade that needs done down the road >_>. If you have all the original install disks or if the recovery partition is still present (like on most prepackaged laptops from Dell, Compaq, HP, etc), for Win7 and the pre-packaged software, could always try a fresh clean install. Never know, if it is a pre-used hand me down, if you are having troubles now, never know what else is dodgey under the hood in the registry and such. It might not even be Trend messing things up, could be something else.

If you feel confident enough, though linking you to a thread reply I made a while back on an uninstall and reinstall of cabal, excluding the uninstaller/reinstall portion the other suggests could be quite valid in this case..

If this is a brand brand new comp you are talking about, I'd go looking through your documentation and perusing through your vendor's support site on where or what the default Admin Password is for your Trend install if it was pre-set at the factory.

One thing I've learned about doing Tech work on a computer, you have to be a bit like a bulldog and dig in to figure it out, and the level of digging this would entail, make sure to make backups each new step in case you do actually nuke or mess something up beyond fixing except taking a step or 2 back from a backup.

Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." when i install and have done the whole anti-virus disable, re-install, i used restore disks i made when cabal DID work (same computer, new hard drive) and still nothing. *sad panda*

Trying to figure these issues out in my head as to where the problem lies.
Another thread involving this is right below this one at time of posting

I am seeing a common denomenator though, all 3 of you are running a 64 bit version of Win7, one of them for certain Ultimate 64 bit Version.

Personally I can only be so much help
1) I'm not playing Cabal anymore
2) I don't run a 64bit version of Win7 on any of my Comp to test with, 1 box is a dual boot with a 32bit version when I need to watch Netflix and couple other things needing specifically windows to run, but other than that all my boxes are running 64bit Linux.
3) Haven't really hacked or tweaked around in 64 bit Vista/7

Remember similar problems way, way back when Win7 was pre-release there were a lot of problems with Cabal and 64bit Win7, can't find the posts here so must have been back when we were still on OGP servers.

One suggestion I would do for all 3 of you, but note it is only a theory to be tested
1) Make a regular backup or backup system image of your windows install partiton/disk
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/
2) Uninstall whatever commercial A/V-Security Suite you currently have if you are running a commercial bundled suite.
3) Install a freeware A/V and either re-enable the windows built-in firewall or get ahold of a freeware firewall, download these 2 before uninstall of your commercial product ahead of time
Good Suggestions for freeware A/V solutions that have had little issue with Cabal on Win7 (32 and 64 bit versions)
1- Avast! http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=mncol;1 (which i highly recommend as I do use it and never f-ed me over when playing Cabal)
2- Avira http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?tag=mncol;1 (have used it in the past, just as solid as Avast!, and like Avast! seen very few complaints of it not playing well with Cabal)
Firewall
Zone Alarm http://download.cnet.com/ZoneAlarm-Free-Firewall/3000-10435_4-10039884.html?tag=mncol;1 (still one of the best freeware firewalls out there, been around a long time)

Just suggestions though, hope it helps.

I have this problem too. Today i just downloaded Cabal and installed it, and unlike everyone else i have no antivirus or any programs of that kind except the windows firewall. So i don't think it is an issue of antivirus programs. Wish this could be fixed so i could play. I'm also using windows 7.

done all that, im using avast, even tried it after completely uninstalling every AV i have on my computer. I used the restore disks i made when cabal DID work. Everything about my computer is the same as it was when cabal worked minus my switched out harddrive, which would really I love you >.<♥I love you >.<♥I love you >.<♥I love you >.<♥ if that turned out to be the problem lol

Okay, so I was browsing through my computer, and look what I found Trend Micro Security. I guess my laptop came with the program, but anyways, my question is how do I make it compatible with Cabal. So when I start my computer, it doesn't run, it's not in any of my processes or services. Frankly, I never knew i even had the program, and I'm guessing its running in the background even though it doesn't load with the computer. Any help would be nice!

if there is no trend micro in the control panel> Programs and Features menu, which is where you uninstall most programs, try going to C:\Program files(x86)\ and seeing if there is any trend micro folders... and lastly you can use start menu, type in Services hit enter, and then Navigate/browse through the list for the Trend Micro service, one of those three should either locate and uninstall or just disable the service from running completely. Adding exceptions for cabal is probably pretty simple through that specific brands control panel (trend micro) but i wouldnt recommend it as it still attaches to processes and windows kernel (system files) that may cause program collisions.

omg why arent there any danged admins on this forum i have the same issue im however running windows vista 34bit and i have trend micro installed and i get the same error as mentioned above ive tried allowing the program to run and trying to run the program as an admin but no luck. =//

TheKen

another thing im noticing is evertime you run the update.exe for cabal it only stacks in the running processes so even when i acknowledge the error report i have to go and actually stop the process from running even though theres no actual update taking place. Is there some way of summoning a gm to this particular topic or something because if people all with the same certain program is having the same problem the obviously this should be looked into more vigirously and an actual gm or w/e would be able to do more help then harm =/
