Pets only gain exp when you use a skill on a normal field or dungeon mob (sword or magic), basic attack like punching/basic sword attack from special tree does not. Nor do they gain by attacking T.Dummies, otherwise there would be every1 running around with a level 10 pet. Pets are hard to level up and meant to be that way unfortunately :/
