i just did this twice 2day.....osm martial hlm 2slot .....a shadowtit GS 1 fch.......upgrade slot showed emty -.-
im thinking it was a glitch... but my guildies had same problem

if the slot showed empty i'm guessing that it could've been a glitch or..............

you were trying to upgrade something like osmium with an inferior catalyst (titanium and lower).
catalysts can be 1 grade lower than what you're trying to upgrade. for osm the minimum is Stit, but u can use Stit, osm, SG, sig or forc.
